142 Throckmorton needs help Entertainment venue 142 Throckmorton Theatre is scrambling to raise $500,000 through community donations in order to remain open in 2010, according to the nonprofit art organization's Web site. While the venue is booked through the end of this year, owner Lucy Mercer says the $500,000 in donations is needed to cover costs for operating the following year. For nearly 100 years, the Mill Valley theater has showcased a cavalcade of live musicians, comedians, dancers, thespians and other performers from the well-known to up-and-coming, Bay Area and beyond. Now operating as a nonprofit, 142 Throckmorton gleans a mere 60 percent of its operating costs from ticket sales—the rest from private donations, which, because of the recession, have decreased significantly—and says it's in danger of shutting down without outside help. On Nov. 17, in-house comedian Mark Pitta is hosting a roast and fundraiser for the venue—and to celebrate the fifth anniversary of his weekly comedy nights. To make a tax-deductible donation, call 415/383-9611 or visit www.142throckmortontheatre.org .
