Marin Rocks rolling to another venue The Marin History Museum's hotly anticipated "Marin Rocks" exhibit will not be staged in the San Rafael Masonic building, as initially planned. Although there's no word yet as to where the tribute to local rock 'n' roll lore and memorabilia will move, museum officials are hoping for a Fourth Street location. Originally planned for September 2009, the History Museum is now shooting for an early 2010 opening. Marin Rocks is intended to be a multimedia exhibit with film and video footage, along with an array of donated artifacts and borrowed collectibles. In the meantime, Metallica frontman and Marin resident James Hetfield has announced participation in a benefit concert for the museum in September.
Novato students off the bus The Novato Unified School District Board voted this week to slash $550,000 from its transportation budget. The cut, which will end bus service for about 600 students, was made because of the district's $4 million revenue loss. Bus service will continue to be provided for special education students, as required by law. And because the board also renewed its $167,732 annual contract with the Reed Union School District this week, Novato district buses will continue to transport Belvedere, Corte Madera and Tiburon students to school.
Homeless shelters get help Marin County has joined with the Marin Community Foundation to grant $1.35 million next year to the county-wide homeless shelter provider, Homeward Bound. Last month, the county provided $50,000 in emergency funds to the Mill Street Center in San Rafael, which was under threat of closure. The county has increased its funding of Marin's homeless shelters to $750,000 next year, while the foundation, which had recently announced its focus would be geared toward encouraging more start-up programs, has agreed to provide $600,000 in funds for Homeward Bound.
