Hero and Zero
HERO: The Plant is a legendary recording studio that's been in Sausalito since 1972. Tons of award-winning albums have been recorded and/or mixed there: Santana's Supernatural, Fleetwood Mac's Rumours, Huey Lewis & the News' Sports. Not to mention the musicians who've floated through, like Bob Marley, Stevie Wonder and Tom Waits. The place is a cultural landmark—so naturally, it's up for demolition and development. But not if the nonprofit A Vehicle for Change has anything to do with it; they're hoping to buy the studio's former location and turn it into an arts center, where Marin's legacy for great music can continue (the Kenny G and Michael Bolton albums notwithstanding).
ZERO: We've always despised the adage, "Those who can't do, teach." And here's why: Last week, a 58-year-old Fairfax man who teaches anger management—and nonviolence to inmates at San Quentin—allegedly got in a tiff with fellow teachers over classes and pay, threatened to kill them, then was admitted to Marin General's mental health unit and was arrested by Twin Cities police upon his release. No, it's not funny. We want our teachers to be human, to have experience with their subject matter and we want them to be paid to reflect their value in society. But um, we'd also like them not to have to post bail before their next class.—Samantha Campos.
