Endorsements: Next Stop--Corte Madera Local Public Issues, posted by Editor, Pacific Sun Online, on Oct 15, 2009 at 3:52 pm
Corte Madera has three council seats on the ballot with a total of four candidates running, including two incumbents, Michael Lappert and Carla Condon, both elected to the council in 2001. George Topor and Diane Furst are the challengers. All seem to agree that the most important issue for the town is its financial status. The candidates all agree with the town's decision to not participate in the Marin Clean Energy Joint Powers Authority, though Furst seems to be most open to reconsidering after receiving more information and isn't impressed with PG&E's alternative.

When they say that too much is being spent to make Corte Madera beautiful, maybe Town Council challengers George Topor and Diane Furst aren't aware that the total amount the Town of Corte Madera spends on Parks and Landscaping is just over 4 percent of the town budget. That 4 percent includes maintenance and operation of all our parks, including the large and well-used Town Park, all the median strips, and landscaping on public property such as Bayside Trail and other bicycle/pedestrian paths. The citizens of Corte Madera take great pride in their town being the prettiest in Marin, and they've let it be known they want to keep it that way.

Fact Checker, please reread my position on beautification. It says that we need to be diligent about watching town expenses, and need to hold the line on non-essential expenses such as beautification. This is very different than saying that too much is spent. I understand what is included under beautification, and believe me, I value what services are provided using these funds. I also recognize that the Town is under financial strain, and we need to be very cautious how we spend our money. I would hope you would consider this to be the prudent position.

With all the time Diane Furst spends searching through articles and letters-to-the-editors in Marin newspapers so she can self-servingly comment and promote her candidacy, when does she find time to be a "stay-at-home mom"?
