I enjoyed reading Cary James captivating review of Joe Gores' new book Spade & Archer. I met Gores some 25 years ago when my fledging public relations shop (The PR Group) was inspired by our dingy downtown office (Kearny & Sutter) us to concoct a national "Hamming Up Hammit" writing contest. Gores was one of the three literary judges who graciously allowed themselves to be subjected to some pretty awful, as well as some amusingly artful wannabee Hammits. Yes, our winners' press conference, complete with such prizes as a bottle of gin and a ham and egg sandwich, made the evening news, the Chronicle, the (then) SF Examiner and wireservices in the name of self-promotion. I hope Gore, if not Hammit, forgive us.
