The Extermination of the Point Reyes Deer
Local Public Issues, posted by Kathleen Mahan, a resident of the Pt. Reyes neighborhood, on Aug 25, 2007 at 8:59 pm

As I was walking my dogs in Point Reyes last night I came across a Fallow deer and her fawn. They were both dead. I assume they were part of the mass extermination project the Point Reyes Seashore Park has embarked on to kill all the exotic deer that live here.

White Buffalo, Inc. is the company hired by the Park to do the extermination.

Seeing the deer laying there dead, I wondered what kind of men sign up to work for a company like White Buffalo? What would it be like to have a job where your whole day, everyday is spent shooting innocent animals? And, as I looked down on the fawn I pondered…what kind of man can look a fawn in the eye and shoot it? And then my thoughts went beyond those men, and I thought…what kind of Park hires those kind of men who can look a fawn in the eye and shoot it?

And then, with a pain in my heart and a chill down my spine I asked…

What kind of people are we, who knowingly allow these men to do these atrocities,

and go about our busy little lives, remaining silent.

As I looked into the eyes of the dead fawn I realized…My own silence is as deadly as the man who pulled the trigger.

Kathleen

I would like to know exactly when you came across these two dead deer.

Would you please email me at michaelrush@clearchannel.com

Kathleen, I get the feeling your comments are aimed at all deer hunters. I hunt deer for recreation purposes... fully licensed and legal. I eat the food I shoot. No different than buying a steak from the grocery store and, in fact, more humane.

I do not completely agree with the park's plan to exterminate the deer either. However, to simply "assume" that the deer that you saw were killed by the park's contractor is just plain ignorant.

The park's agreement with the contract hunters specifies they bring the deer to a butchering facility, they are not just left laying-around for park visitors to trip over. The deer are only shot on park property.

The meat is given to a number of charities and to the California Condor Project. Deer out here die all the time from a variety of causes. The highest percentage are killed by cars. Many do not die outright but stagger away from the road and are found all over the place.
