Spin of the Week: Stevie Coyle's 'Ten in One'
A loose-knit folk-rock opera with carnival effects

Stevie Coyle
Ten in One (Tuna Mine)

This ambitious solo debut from the talented singer and songwriter Stevie Coyle, the ex-guitarist of the progressive bluegrass band the Waybacks, is loose-knit folk-rock opera featuring vignettes linked by incidental sounds and recordings of a carnival sideshow barker, all infused with traditional folk instrumentation and a sometimes dark sense of humor. The concept album--which features Mike Marshall, Phillip Aaberg and others--has been likened to an Americana Sgt. Pepper's, but it really owes a debt to Wall of Voodoo honcho Stan Ridgway.
