| Noted local activist and former Marin Healthcare District board member Sylvia Siegel died last week at The Redwoods retirement center in Mill Valley. She was 89.
Known both for her sharp mind and unshakable tenacity, Siegel founded and acted as executive director of the public utility watchdog group TURN, which fought and won numerous consumer-advocacy battles against PG&E and other industry heavyweights. She was elected to the board charged with overseeing Marin General Hospital's lease in 1994, where she served for six years.
According to friends and family, Siegel's rabble-rousing spirit stayed strong to the end--she reportedly tried to spearhead an effort to unionize the nursing staff at The Redwoods to help boost their pay.
Donations in Siegel's memory can be made to TURN www.turn.org Hospice of Marin or the American Cancer Society.

Posted by Susan, a resident of the Novato neighborhood, on Aug 29, 2007 at 5:36 pm I was sad to see that Sylvia Siegel died. She certainly had a full and long life, so that part is not so sad, but our world will be the poorer for missing her energy and fearlessness. She was the kind of person who believed she could take on the most enormous forces and have an impact. She did and she did. It's great that TURN is carrying on her work, but I wish there were more people like her out there today when we need them to battle the giant profit machines that our society has produced.
