Homeless shelter winter rotation begins
Countwide plan set to begin Dec. 1 in some towns

Share
A countywide plan to rotate temporary emergency homeless shelters at churches this winter is set to begin Dec. 1 and run through March. However, San Rafael city officials have rejected Marin Interfaith Council requests for a provisional permit to operate temporary women's homeless shelters in four churches sooner than Dec. 8. Meanwhile, the town of San Anselmo has agreed to shelter 30 homeless men for three nights a week at its First Presbyterian Church, with help from members of St. John's Episcopal Church in Ross.

I am very disappointed that the San Rafael City Council has rejected Marin Interfaith Council requests for a provisional permit to operate temporary women's homeless shelters in four churches sooner than Dec. 8. I attended the Council's meeting at which this was discussed, and I think the majority's intransigence is an appalling example of bureaucracy, and without merit.

What happened to Homeward Bound of Marin? Are they still servicing the homeless?

I think Homeward Bound it at capacity or beyond.

I see that San Anslemo managed to accommodate this need. And they are revising their ordinance to make it easier in the future. That's leadership, which is sadly lacking in San Rafael whose politicians and petty bureaucrats make excuses about being unable to act because of their own ordinances and run when the hint of any neighborhood opposition pops up - the opposite of a warm holiday example.

Permits??? Bring people in from the cold. How about some of you millionaires, nay, billionaries, providing some shelter.
