Entertainment venue 142 Throckmorton Theatre is scrambling to raise $500,000 through community donations for its continued operations in 2010, according to the nonprofit art organization's Web site. While the venue is booked through the end of this year, executive director Lucy Mercer says the $500,000 in donations is needed to cover costs for the following year.
For nearly 100 years, the Mill Valley theater has showcased a cavalcade of live musicians, comedians, dancers, thespians and other performers from the well-known to up-and-coming, Bay Area and beyond. Now operating as a nonprofit, 142 Throckmorton gleans a mere 60 percent of its operating costs from ticket sales--the rest from private donations, which, because of the recession, have decreased significantly--and says it's in danger of shutting down without outside help.
On Nov. 17, in-house comedian Mark Pitta is hosting a roast and fundraiser for the venue--and to celebrate the fifth anniversary of his weekly comedy nights. To make a tax-deductible donation, call 415/383-9611 or visit www.142throckmortontheatre.org/involved.

Posted by Neil Adelman, a resident of the Mill Valley neighborhood, on Nov 12, 2009 at 2:05 pm nothing would be sadder for Mill Valley & it's history then to close the 142 Throckmorton theatre. After the demise of Village Music & the Sweetwater, this would be the last straw & depress the sleepy downtown into hibernation. I hope some of the super rich rally behind them before it's too late!

I'm amazed that the wealthy people in Mill Valley aren't coming foward. There are many of them.
They must not care about theatre I guess. At least Mark Pitta's going to rally behind the cause, way to go Mark!
Hey, if I had money, I'd throw it in.

Posted by john, a resident of the San Rafael neighborhood, on Nov 13, 2009 at 4:25 pm The rumor is that the ol George's niteclub in downtown San Rafael will be open by April of 2010 with a similar venue as Yoshi's and better suited to Marin patrons. Next door will be the Marin Rock Musieum and down the block the new Rafters Brewery.
All coming soon.
