Fossil fuel-free fun
Green is the new black and anyone who's anyone knows that being energy-efficient and low-carbon will make you smarter, stronger, sexier and look years younger, with virtually no side effects. And as part of 350.org's INTERNATIONAL DAY OF CLIMATE ACTION, Transition West Marin and West Marin Commons are hosting a free climate action demonstration, rally and low-carbon faire for all you sexy green geeks! There'll be marching with signs (noon); speakers, including Jerry Mander and Steve Kinsey (1pm); a group photo with people in the shapes of 3, 5 and 0 to be uploaded to 350.org's Web site; solar dyeing and electric bike exhibits; live music, pressed apple cider, Straus ice cream; an energy-efficient renovation open house at 11560 Route 1 (2-5pm); and, of course, a barn dance in Tomales (7pm). Oct. 24 at Point Reyes Station, 3rd Street at Highway One. Info: Vsit transitionwestmarin.org or call 415/663-1380.
Woodstock, redux--S.F.-style
In celebration of Woodstock's 40th anniversary, WESTFEST is featuring a totally far-out lineup of musicians and hippie luminaries--some of whom were actually there, man, like Country Joe McDonald and Jefferson Starship (then, as Jefferson Airplane), as well as Lester Chambers, Ronnie Montrose, Narada Michael Walden and so many others. But unlike that famed festival of yore, this one's only one day of "peace and music" (jury's out on the mud forecast) but still manages to include "a psychedelic blend of earthy fusion" belly-dancers, DJs galore, a skateboard ramp, a global meditation and a "cosmic transmission from the Galactic Center." Plus, there'll be eco games, recycled art, tie-dye vendors, a drum circle, a "hoopers" heaven, a Native American tipi village, electric bike tours, tarot, holistics and herbals, and an all-day eco dome of classes, speakers and demos. Free admission. 9am-6pm, Oct. 25 at Speedway Meadows, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. To register for the world's largest guitar ensemble playing "Purple Haze," visit www.steveroby.com.
