Hero and Zero
Local librarians and neighborhood parking hoarders

by Samantha Campos
HERO: Silvia Lange of Nicasio wished to give our local librarians some props, especially Laurie Thompson at the Anne T. Kent California Room, Civic Center branch. Thompson recently encouraged and facilitated Lange's annotated bibliography of Angel Island. Now Lange lauds Thompson for keeping Marin history alive, making it "accessible to a broad audience by sleuthing through files, oral histories and non-circulating books"--and by piloting other Marin bibliographies on genealogy, houseboats, railroads and ferries, Mt. Tam railroad and on researching historic houses. The busy librarian has also chaired talks by local writers on Nicasio, Ross, Point Reyes and San Rafael.
ZERO: A couple of weekends ago, "Concerned Neighbor" alerted us to a resident on Spinnaker Point Drive who arranged for temporary No Parking signs to be placed on the streets near his home. That meant nobody could park in the San Rafael 'hood on that particular Saturday from noon to 3pm, with the signs giving no indication why other residents or visitors were being denied access. And when CN passed by the area at 2pm, there were two parking control officers parked there, ready to ticket anyone who ignored the signs. But apparently, it was all because someone was having a party that afternoon and wanted to make sure parking was available for the guests. Are you receiving Express, our free daily e-mail edition?
