Suspicious meat pies
A 19th-century barber, unjustly exiled from London, exacts revenge against the evil judge who wronged him, resulting in the disappearance of notable townspeople--and the curious sudden proliferation of some very tasty meat pies...It's deliciously disturbing, it's chillingly charming--it's SWEENEY TODD, Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler's classic musical tale, as told by the masterful young actors of Marin Summer Theater. 8pm July 31-Aug. 1; 2pm Aug. 2, at the Emily Gates Student Center, San Marin High School, 15 San Marin Dr., Novato. For info, call 707/781-6302 or visit online at www.marinsummertheater.org. --Samantha Campos

Wonderful things
Treasures from the tomb of King Tutankhamun have been around for over 3,000 years, but the de Young Museum's exhibition of some of its most amazing artifacts will only be on display through March--so there's no time like the present to take a trip into humankind's ancient past. TUTANKHAMUN AND THE GOLDEN AGE OF THE PHARAOHS is a winding exhibit of nine rooms (we like to think of them as "chambers") that illuminate the history of the "boy king" and his Pharaoh family through amazing burial items like gold-hewn coffinettes and precious scarabs to such child prizes as an intricately carved kid's chair and Tut's favorite game boards. And placing the somewhat overwhelming display in context are wall slides from the 1922 Howard Carter excavation, when the understated Egyptologist said famously upon first entering the tomb, "I see wonderful things."
You'll see wonderful things, too. Summer hours are 9am to 9pm, daily (closed Aug. 3 and 31). The museum is at 50 Hagiwara Tea Garden Drive in Golden Gate Park. For admission prices, call 415/750-3600 or visit tutsanfrancisco.org. --Jason Walsh
