Of all the films released in 2009, "Precious" is most likely to stick in your craw, pitch a tent and refuse to leave. In adapting Sapphire's novel, screenwriter Geoffrey Fletcher and director Lee Daniels put front and center an everyday unsung hero, her horrifying circumstances and her dark, narrow path toward something better.

Movie review: The Maid
In just the ﬁrst few scenes of 30-year-old Chilean director Sebastian Silva's "The Maid," we ﬁnd out several key facts about the title character, the live-in maid Raquel (Catalina Saavedra): She's 41 and has served the same upper-crust Chilean family for over 20 years. Her employers, Pilar and Mundo, treat her with a mixture of affection and condescension.
